�W���b�WC Comments on the judging of the WanCup

This was my second year to judge in the WanCup. I judged in three flights: wheat/weiss beers, followed by stout, then a quick but delicious lunch, followed by judging of the fruit and herb beers. The standard of entries was quite good. Most entries were at least a fair representation of the style, and the top three or four beers in each class were of a very good standard. We had one �ggusher" (beer that froths violently when opened) and one beer that seemed to fail to meet the requirements of its purported style. There were also a few beers with noticeable minor flaws, such as low levels of acetaldehyde (green apples), minor oxidation (sherry/wet cardboard), and metallic twang. I think this as better than last year when several beers had major flaws (terrible oxidation).

The stout class had the most consistently good entries and I was highly impressed by a couple of the entries. The fruit/herb class was the most difficult to judge because it is harder to come up with a strong ideal model of the style. On top of this, I am simply not a big fan of fruit in beer, which is a challenge all judges have to contend with: how to put aside personal taste preferences. This is easier with a tightly defined style, but more difficult with a style that is open to brewer interpretation (fruit, specialty beers).

In summary, I again enjoyed the judging and hope I will be back again next year. I would also like to see more entries and a larger pool of trained judges. Competitions are a great way to advance one's brewing and beer evaluation skills, and I encourage all involved in the hobby in Japan to promote participation in the comp and the development of judging skills.
